In optics, the image of an object is defined as the collection of focus points of light rays coming from the object. A real image is the collection of focus points made by converging rays, while a virtual image is the collection of focus points made by extensions of diverging rays. In other words, a virtual image is found by tracing real rays that emerge from an optical device backward to perceived or apparent origins of ray divergences. Simply speaking, an image is virtual when rays diverge from it. There is also a concept virtual object; an object is virtual when rays converge toward it.

जब वस्तु से निकलने वाली प्रकाश किरणे अभिसरित (डाइवर्ज) हो रहीं हों तो इस प्रकार बने प्रतिबिम्ब को प्रकाशिकी में आभासी बिंब कहते हैं। आभासी बिंब उस बिन्दु पर स्थित मालूम पड़ता है जहाँ से किरणें अभिसरित होती हुई प्रतीत होतीं हैं। । चूंकि इस स्थिति में किरणे वास्तव में मिलती नहीं हैं, आभासी बिम्ब को किसी पर्दे पर प्रक्षेपित नहीं किया जा सकता। प्रकाशीय प्रणालियों के चित्रों में आभासी किरणों को डॉटदार रेखाओं द्वारा सुविधानुसार निरूपित किया जाता है।
